An Update on Raha

Published on the 12th of December, 2024

When we rescued Raha in 2022, predators had mauled her rear end, leaving her with a severely injured rectum. Painstaking veterinary intervention rebuilt this area, though she has continued to experience unavoidable digestive issues.

Last month, on 10th November, Raha unexpectedly suffered a prolapse of her rectum. It had been well over a year since her last prolapse, so this latest development marked a significant setback. Our vet acted quickly to perform surgery to repair Raha’s rear end. We are happy to report that the operation has been successful, and she is progressing well.

However, Raha remains reluctant to feed as a black rhino of her age should. She avoids browsing on roughage, instinctively knowing that passing it will cause her discomfort. Instead, she prefers soft greens and lucerne pellets. She also enjoys her milk feeds, which we fortify with oats for added nutrition. This diet fills Raha’s tummy, but it doesn’t allow her growing body to fill out as a rhino of her age normally would, hence her unusual appearance.

Raha’s case is challenging and unprecedented. While the prolapse was a serious concern, we are pleased with her progress in the aftermath. Raha is a brave and determined little girl — and she has an entire team devoted to her welfare. (Truly, every Keeper at the Nursery is vying for Raha duty!)

It is chilly and wet in Nairobi at the moment, so we are mindful to keep her wrapped and warm in her trusty blankets. Inclement weather doesn’t hold Raha back — she still forges ahead, leading her Keepers where she wants to go with her usual chorus of chatty squeaks.

We cannot predict what the future holds for Raha, but we are happy with her current progress. Her foster family will be the first to hear about any developments, but for now, we celebrate this good news!
