Three Months of Umani Babies Lenny and Sulwe

Published on the 15th of March, 2025

Our enchanting Umani babies, Lenny and Sulwe, were only born in December — but in the past three months, they have taken the Kibwezi Forest by storm.

Much like Mwana, Umani's first grandbaby, we have had the unique privilege of witnessing every chapter of Lenny and Sulwe's lives. Over the course of 22 months, we saw their mothers, Lima Lima and Sonje, grow progressively more pregnant. We met Lenny within hours of his birth on 3rd December — just as we did three weeks later, when our Christmas gift, Sulwe, was born.

Although they are now leading fully wild lives, Lima Lima and Sonje still choose to link up with the Keepers and dependent orphans almost every morning, so they can spend the day together as one family. As night falls, mothers, babies, and an peel off into the forest, and at dawn the following morning, everyone reunites again.

When Lenny and Sulwe walk together, you could mistake them for twins. Lima Lima’s boy and Sonje’s girl are not related by birth, but they will grow up as brother and sister. Like any siblings, they happily play and then bicker, play and bicker, in a constant rotation! Sulwe is younger by three weeks, but she is proving to be a tough girl and can more than hold her own against Lenny.

Elephant society is wonderful in that, when a baby is born, everything suddenly revolves around that little life. This is true, times two, for Lenny and Sulwe. Everyone is absolutely smitten. Mwana has matured overnight into a model 'big sister,' Murera generously allows the babies to nurse from her (payback for all the times Mwana nursed from Lima Lima and Sonje!), the big girls have become excellent nannies, and even the boys are doting in their own way.

You would never guess that Lima Lima and Sonje are first-time mothers. They are absolute pros, although they have distinct parenting styles. Sonje is very independent and is only interested in mothering her own baby. Meanwhile, Lima Lima is very generous and happily looks after Sulwe and Mwana, along with Lenny. We are curious what type of mother Zongoloni will be when her time comes — which will be soon!

In this special film, we invite you into the first three months of Lenny and Sulwe's lives. This is just the beginning of a beautiful story that will continue to unfold over the following years and decades. And to think, these little babies are only here today because their mothers — two orphans — were saved many moons ago.
