Released in the USA on 8th April, IMAX Born to be Wild 3D has subsequently been reaching theatres across the globe. The film, stunningly captured in IMAX 3D and narrated by Morgan Freeman, portrays Dame Daphne Sheldrick’s efforts, more than ably supported by the elephant keepers and her family, to rescue, rehabilitate and return to the wild, milk dependent orphaned baby elephants.
Already showing at IMAX theatres in the Australia, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany Poland and the USA, the film opened in the UK on 17th June.
To support the UK launch and its associated press, Dame Daphne Sheldrick was flown to the UK, courtesy of IMAX and Warner Bros. Daphne undertook a plethora of print, TV and radio interviews throughout her 6 day trip, sharing her experiences of elephants and all wildlife.
Daphne was also the guest of honour at the film’s UK Premiere at London’s BFI IMAX on Tuesday 14th June, joined by the film’s writer and producer Drew Fellman. As well as a host of celebrities, including the legendary Brian May, Rula Lenska, Miranda Richardson and Kevin Adams and other friends and supporters of the DSWT.
Unsurprisingly this beautiful film was thoroughly enjoyed by all, the 3D making it the closest experience possible to actually being at the Nairobi orphanage. A point demonstrated when the audience seemed to move as one to ‘head’ a football that the elephants appeared to kick out of the screen in one scene!
A drinks reception with bitings was hosted by IMAX and Warner Bros. following the screening, with live music by Masai Cultural Arts. Ensuring everyone had a lovely evening, with many finding an opportunity to talk with Daphne, her daughter Jill and DSWT staff and volunteers who were on hand to talk about the charity’s current projects and harness future support.
This visit to the UK also allowed Daphne a little time to progress plans for the launch of her much anticipated biography, which is due for release in Spring 2012.
Below you will find a short selection of TV, radio and print interviews that Daphne undertook during her time in the UK and we hope you will find time to watch, listen and read these. As there is no person better placed to talk about the DSWT’s orphans’ project, one of a series of programmes undertaken by the charity to protect wildlife, than Dame Daphne. The Founder and Chair of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
