Watch: Detection Saves Lives

Published on the 16th of February, 2025

When treating nature’s giants, we use all the tools at our disposal.

Sometimes, that means a metal detector. After an elephant is arrowed, the arrowhead often remains lodged inside. This can have lethal complications — especially if the arrow is poisoned, which is a favoured tactic of ivory poachers.

That’s why we left no stone unturned in this treatment. During an aerial patrol, our pilot spotted a big bull with a telltale arrow wound on his side. He picked up KWS veterinarian Dr Kariuki, who was then flown to the scene by the SWT helicopter.

After darting the patient from the air, the SWT/KWS Mobile Vet Unit moved in for treatment. The team tended to the wound and checked for any lurking debris under the skin.

Fortunately, the bull was given the all-clear. Thanks to rapid intervention, he is expected to make a full recovery.
