The Olare Orok female elephant that our Mara Veterinary Team treated for the first time back in May that we worked so hard to save, recovered and healed, against all odds. We are deeply saddened to report that she was later killed by poachers in the second week of September, some distance away from the conservancy, she died as a result of a poisoned arrow. Her trust in humans ultimately became her downfall it seems. Poaching is fast becoming a real threat to all elephants in Kenya, and the Mara elephants are every bit as vulnerable as those in Tsavo or in the Northern part of Kenya. She had small ivory, but enough to cost her life.
