The Rift Valley Mobile Vet Unit attended 20 cases in May. Much of the area received rainfall, keeping vegetation fresh for wildlife. We were pleased to observe a reduction in snaring and poaching cases, but there was an increase in human-wildlife conflict cases.
The majority of these cases were relocations of zebras, hartebeest, and buffalos who were habitual crop raiders and/or presented a danger to humans. The team also successfully treated several injured zebra, including one with a suspected panga injury and another who was tethered to a snare. Unfortunately, a giraffe died after it stepped on a covered pit latrine.
