During May 2021, the SWT/KWS Mount Kenya Wildlife Veterinary Unit attended to multiple wildlife cases that required urgent veterinary intervention in the Laikipia ecosystem and Mt. Kenya region.
The Unit treated one elephant for a bullet wound and conducted a post-mortem on another elephant which revealed it had died from a gunshot wound. Other cases involved the treatment of a white rhino for a sprain injury, a bongo was treated for an abscess and 4 other bongos were relocated within Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy. Two post-mortems were conducted on black rhino, assumed to have died during territorial fights.
