January 2023 was a busy month for the SWT/KWS Mount Kenya Mobile Wildlife Veterinary Unit. Rhinos made up half the cases attended to, along with an array of other species.
The Mount Kenya Mobile Veterinary Unit attended to 14 cases in total in January. These comprised of seven rhino cases, two elephant cases, one giraffe case, one buffalo case, one leopard case, and two mountain bongo cases.
While the majority of patients were treated for naturally-caused injuries and illnesses, two cases were the result of human actions. A snared giraffe was successfully treated, while an elephant who had been shot with a poisoned arrow had already succumbed to his injuries. A young orphaned elephant was rescued from the Loldaiga Hills and is now recuperating at the Nairobi Nursery.
January also marked the beginning of Dr Jeremiah Poghon's tenure as lead veterinarian of the Mount Kenya Mobile Veterinary Unit, as Dr Mijele began a new role in Nairobi. After his successful spell leading the Tsavo Unit, we feel fortunate to have Dr Poghon's talents in this landscape.
