The Unit attended eight animal cases , assisting elephants, a giraffe and zebra. Three of the animals attended were suffering from snare wounds.
Despite a delay in the rains this rainy season, the Eastern Conservation Area is flourishing with rich vegetation following speedy regeneration after fairly good rains finally arrived. The Unit is optimistic that the vegetation so far generated will continue supporting healthy and viable wildlife populations within the ecosystem.
Cases attended during the month include a post-mortem on an elephant who was a victim of human-wildife conflict and a treatment of a bull elephant with two bullet wounds. The Unit also participated in an elephant rescue but sadly the weakened calf passed away before reaching the Nursery. A zebra was treated for natural causes, as was a black rhino which suffered injuries during a territorial fight with a particularly aggressive older male. IT's suffering has been greatly eased but unfortunately the animal was given a poor prognosis due to the severity of the injuries.
