The SWT/KWS Mara Veterinary Unit attended to 9 cases during October, including call-outs to assist three elephants in a single day, all of which had been caught in snares.
In total, six of the nine cases attend in the month were snare related. In the cases involving elephants, all three individuals were younger calves, treated in the Mara Triangle, close to the border with Serengeti (in Tanzania). It is assumed they were accidental victims, with the intended targets for these indiscriminate devices being migrating wildebeests, which were crossing over to Kenya from Tanzania. Tragically, many snare traps are laid along the border to catch animals as they migrate between the Serengeti and the Mara, with KWS and local partners operating anti-poaching patrols to address this illegal activity.
