Area covered

This month the team patrolled the private land that has been bought up as a buffer for the National Park along the Athi River, from Simon Trevor’s land through to Mr. Nutter’s land.

Findings

For the first three weeks we found an increase in the amount of wild animals in these areas especially small and medium sized game. This shows that the animals were coming back into these areas in search of water from the Athi River. Once it rained the number of animals diminished during the last week of the month due to the fact that the animals were now able to get water from the waterholes found deeper inside the park. We did not find any active snares in any of the areas we visited. The team attended to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust tree nursery.

During the course of the month we also joined up with Burra, Mtitio, and Ziwani to take part in the cleanup of the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway. This took place over a period of two days and covered the Highway from Mtito to Ndii. We also picked some seeds which we are drying for the nursery, as The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust donates indigenous trees to the communities along the boundaries of Tsavo East and West National Parks. Once they are dry we will be able to plant them. There were no football games at any of the schools this month.
