47 SNARES COLLECTED
Area covered
This month the team patrolled the Kilalinda sanctuary, Jimmy’s farm and Marcos Dan’s farm.
Findings
Due to the fact that all of the areas patrolled are far from our base at Kambi ya mawe we had to find alternative places to camp. We were able to camp at Jimmy’s farm which borders Marcos Dan’s farm and the Kilalinda Sanctuary. We camped there for a duration of three weeks. Most of our desnaring efforts were concentrated in and around Marcos Dan’s farm where a total of 47snares were lifted, 46 of which targeting small game and only one targeting medium sized game. During our patrols we came across a dead snared lesser kudu. There were numerous tracks in the area all of which led us to areas where snares had previously been set, but had consequently been removed due to the thickness of the vegetation making it difficult for the poachers to reach their snares.
No snares were found in either Jimmy’s farm or the Kilalinda sanctuary. However there was an abundance of wildlife. The surrounding communities are still busy tending to their farms which could account for the decrease in poaching. Patrols carried out in the dry season will give us a better idea of any poaching problems in the area.
