21 SNARES COLLECTED

Area covered

This month the team patrolled the usual areas as well as the Mtito River and its streams.

Findings

With the onset of the dry season we have noticed that there has been an increase in the number of wildlife leaving the park and entering the community areas in search of water. For this reason we concentrated our operations and patrols along the river and the migratory routes both of which are the main areas that poachers use to set their snares. We were able to lift 9 snares during our patrols in these areas.

We received a report from a neighboring farm called Kilalinda that one of their goats had become trapped in a snare. We immediately went to assist them and after freeing the goat decided to search the area for more snares, lifting 11 small snares some of which were active.

We advised and encouraged the Kilalinda staff to be on the lookout for more snares and other illegal activities. They agreed to do so and said that they would inform us should they notice anything taking place. We were able to lift a total of 21 snares during the course of the month.
