De – Snaring Report for July 2007

Area of operation:
During the month of July, the Burra team covered the following areas: Ngutuni, Dokota, Voi River/Sala area, Mwatate Sisal Estate, and Kulalu Ranch.
386 SNARES RECOVERED
FINDINGS.
The Burra team lifted a total of 386 Snares during July. Out of this total 11 snares were targeting big game and 375 targeting small game. 4 poachers were arrested at Dokota area and Kulalu Ranch. One was in possession of Ivory and bush meat. Three illegal grazers were arrested a Voi River. The team found a dead snared camel at Mwatate Sisal Estate. We also partook in the effort to try and contorl bushfire outbreaks in Ndii and Ndara areas.
Observable evidence:
Ngutuni With the beginning of the dry season the snaring has generally increased. The snares lifted in this area were targeting small game and guinea fowls.
Dokota Poachers from this area rarely use snares as their method to kill animals. They mainly use the lamping method to kill wildlife. It was in this area that we caught and arrested a poacher in possession of Ivory and bush meat.
He was booked at Voi police station and was alter sentenced to 4 years in jail.Kulalu Ranch The poaching methods in this area are similar to those in Dokota. The team arrested 3 poachers all in possession of bush meat.
They had killed 10 Dikdik’s and were taking them to sell at the markets. These poachers were also booked at Voi police station.Mwatate Sisal Estate The number of snares lifted in this area was alarming, a total of 315 snares targeting both big and small game.
Voi River/ Sala Area In these areas the main illegal activities taking pace was illegal grazing. The team arrested 3 illegal grazers.
