The rains, which were expected to begin near the end of March or beginning of April looked like they might fail completely across most of Tsavo. Fortunately, however, Tsavo suddenly witnessed several significant storms, which dumped water over large parts of the Park bringing on a flush of green and filling up hundreds of dried up waterholes. As a result of the late onset of the rainy season, the weather had little impact on illegal activity.
During the month, the KWS/DSWT anti-poaching teams recovered a total of 512 snares and confiscated a further 37. The majority of snares were recovered by the Chyulu team (146) and the Meru team (124), which was covering for the Tiva team during their annual leave.
Thirty-eight arrests were made in April between the Mtito and Chyulu teams with apprehensions made for trespassing, poaching, logging, illegal livestock intrusion and charcoal burning.
