During April, the SWT/KWS Amboseli Mobile Veterinary Unit attended to four cases; three elephants and a lioness.
It was a sad month for the team, with all four cases involving post-mortems to determine the cause of death. One female elephant in poor condition had drowned after collapsing in a dam, while another female elephant had died while unsuccessfully trying to give birth. The cause of death for the third elephant was non-conclusive due to decomposition of the carcass, but was determined to be natural and non-infectious. The lioness, found at Oltiasika, had sustained fatal injuries caused by a spear in a suspected instance of human-wildlife conflict.
