Peregrine Team Update: 01 May 2005
Participants
Jacob Dadi – Team leader Isaia Ndei
Area covered
This month the team patrolled the private land that has been bought up as a buffer for the National Park along the Athi River, from Simon Trevor’s land through to Mr. Nutter’s land. They also patrolled the land around the Trust House.
Findings
With the onset of the beginning of the dry season many animals are still moving from the parks into the private land that borders the Athi River in search of water. For this reason we concentrated our de-snaring efforts along the Athi River as this is where we feel most snares will be set, we were pleased to see that no snares had been set. During our patrols we were alerted to the fact that there is a rhino in the area as we spotted its footprints. We decided to try and monitor the rhino but unfortunately we did not see any further footprints. We are still keeping an eye out for both fresh footprints and the rhino itself. The team also attended to the trees planted around the trust house. We planted fresh seeds and hope to transplant the seedlings into plastic bags in the next month. Once they have been transplanted they will be ready to be delivered to the various communities in the Mtito area.
